The markings at the root end are fine rootlets in the soil of the bamboo grove
that left permanent and indelible impressions on the surface of the culm.
I have witnessed this phenomenon only once before in my many years as a shakuhachi maker,
but not anywhere near the degree or magnitude of this piece.
