ALLEN NYOSHIN STEIR graduated from the Manhattan School with a Masters of Musci (Clarinet) in 1964. He taught instruments music in the New York City school system for 37 years. He studied the shakuhachi in New York with Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin, in Kyoto, with Yoshio Kurahashi and in Tokyo with Aoki Reibo. In 1996 he received his Jun-ShiHan certificate and the performing name of Nyoshin, meaning "as the essence of spirit and truth," and in 1998 received his ShiHan certificate. Allen has performed extensively with the New York Gaga-ku Imperial Orchestra, as both a solo artist, and a member of trio ensembles at Tenri Culture Center, playing classical Japanese music, and as a guest artist with the Inoue Ensemble. |
