Ginetsu Nakamura and I fully outfitted for the madake hunt. This special digging tool was designed by Nakamura who has been making shakuhachi for over 35 years and has harvested his own bamboo each season.

A special measuring tool, also conceived by Nakamura, for quckly and accurately determining the diameter range of bamboo suitable for shakuhachi. The tool also sizes smaller diameter bamboo used for nakasuke, the joint in two-piece instruments.
